Last Saturday morning, over 60 educators braved the first snowstorm of 2012 to participate in The 12th Annual Language Series opening workshop, The Language of Sequential Art: Comics in the Classroom.

Throughout the day, Bank Street alum Bill Ayers and cartoonist Ryan Alexander-Tanner led dual-language, bilingual, Special Ed., and monolingual teachers through a theoretical and practical exploration of comics (which is, as they said time and again, a medium—and not a genre) as a powerful tool for literacy and social justice in the classroom.

Oh, did I really forget to post this from my trip to Iceland: The Sequel. Well, there’s this little restaurant in Reykjavik’s old harbor close to the city’s center called Sægreifinn or The Sea Baron. They serve whale (minke), smoked eel, and variety of soups. My favorite is the lobster soup, considered the world’s greatest, concocted of a secret recipe which Kjartan, the proprietor/master chef/retired fisherman will never disclose. Try it if you happen to be in town.

In America, Santa Claus is portrayed as a jolly fat man with a cadre of elves serving as helpers. In Holland, they have Sinterklaas, a stern and tall bishop. Accompanied by his ~~slaves~~ 17th century Moorish Pages, usually portrayed by white men in blackface, Sinterklaas is known to beat and kidnap bad children and distribute oranges to the good ones.
