The Apache Dance:
Apache is a highly dramatic dance associated in popular culture with Parisian street culture in the beginning of the 20th century. The name of the dance (pronounced ah-PAHSH, not uh-PATCH-ee, like the English pronunciation of the Native American tribe) is taken from a Parisian street gang, which in turn was named for the American Indian tribe due to the perceived savagery of the hoodlums. The term came to be used more generally to refer to certain vicious elements of the Paris underworld at the beginning of the 20th century.
The dance is very brutal to the woman, and sometimes said to reenact a “discussion” between pimp and prostitute. It includes mock slaps and punches, the man picking up and throwing the woman to the ground, or lifting and carrying her while she struggles or feigns unconsciousness. In some examples, the woman may fight back.

I’m putting the Chorus Project, which started out as an explorative dance group, on hold for the summer so that I may focus on its music and creative aspects. Just so you know, no more dance until further notice. Thanks to all who attended. I hope you got as much out of it as I have. I learned a lot about myself. I hope you did too.
Previously and informally known as the “Amdance,” the dance project I am conducting has changed its name to the “Chorus Project.” As it were, members who are serious have the option to be part of a modern chorus line organized around original musical numbers. Dance routines are primarily choreography by myself, but are open to collaborative input. In fact, dear dancers, I recommend it.
Dschinghis Khan is calling. Let’s Sing Along. If you would like to dance along, you can do that too. In fact, I recommend it.
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Reiter – Ho Reiter – He Reiter – Immer weiter!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
Auf Brüder! – Sauft Brüder! – Rauft Brüder! – Immer wieder!
Laßt noch Wodka holen
Denn wir sind Mongolen
Und der Teufel kriegt uns früh genug!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Reiter – Ho Reiter – He Reiter – Immer weiter!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Männer – Ho Männer – Tanzt Männer – So wie immer!
Und man hört ihn lachen
Immer lauter lachen
Denn seiner Kraft konnt’ keiner widerstehen
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Reiter – Ho Reiter – He Reiter – Immer weiter!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
Auf Brüder! – Sauft Brüder! – Rauft Brüder! – Immer wieder!
Laßt noch Wodka holen
Denn wir sind Mongolen
Und der Teufel kriegt uns früh genug!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Reiter – Ho Reiter – He Reiter – Immer weiter!
Dsching-, Dsching-, Dschinghis Khan
He Männer – Ho Männer – Tanzt Männer – So wie immer!
Und man hört ihn lachen
Immer lauter lachen
Und er leert den Krug in einem Zug
I watched an amazing documentary about the Mormons and learned that they can dance like hell. Remember Napoleon Dynamite… There’s something to be said for a faith that celebrates dance.
Nietzsche said, “I should not believe in God who does not dance.”
An observer in the 1850s noted, “Mormons taught their children that they should go to school, but theymust go to dancing school.”
The Mormons. Fascinating and beautiful to watch.
